Imatib-400 mg contains Imatinib, an oral anti-cancer medicine belonging to the class of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). It is widely used in the treatment of certain blood cancers and solid tumors by targeting specific abnormal proteins responsible for cancer cell growth.
Mechanism of Action
Imatinib works by selectively inhibiting abnormal tyrosine kinases, including:
- BCR-ABL fusion protein (seen in chronic myeloid leukemia)
- c-Kit (CD117) receptor
- Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptors (PDGFR)
By blocking these enzymes, it:
- Prevents cancer cell proliferation
- Induces apoptosis (programmed cell death)
- Inhibits tumor growth and progression
Uses
Imatib-400 mg (Imatinib) is indicated for:
- Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)
- Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) (Philadelphia chromosome-positive)
- Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST)
- Myelodysplastic/Myeloproliferative disorders (MDS/MPD)
- Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES)
Adverse Effects
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fluid retention (edema, especially around eyes and ankles)
- Muscle cramps
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
Serious Side Effects:
- Myelosuppression (low blood cell counts)
- Hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity)
- Severe fluid retention (pleural effusion, ascites)
- Cardiac effects (rare)
- Gastrointestinal bleeding (in some cases)
